The road to Crouzoul winds its way up through the Cevènnes for a kilometre before reaching the village. I chose this spot from which to paint because of the road leading your eye into the painting, the mountains to the left and the afternoon light, heat and shadows. I was caught out in the early stages by the Mistral wind, which blew a sudden, violent gust, toppling my easel on what had been a peaceful summer afternoon. It created a small puncture mark in the canvas which I repaired using acrylic paint. The house in the painting lies on the outskirts of the village.
